Each week we'll share a Taming Tip for you, your family and friends to do with your dog(s)! These tips will help teach your dog real world manners in a fun way. Leave us a comment and tell us how it went!

Taming Tip #5:

This week practice three different behaviors in three different rooms of your house! Practice a sit in one room, down-stay in another room and a sit-stay at the front or back door before you go outside or even before coming back in!  Practice for about 5 minutes, once in the morning and again in the evening. Don't forget to click and treat!!

Taming Tip #4:

This is a great game to improve your dog's recall.  Wait until your dog is in another area of your house, then go hide in another room and call your dog very exuberantly, using his name or the word "come".  When your dog finds you, give him a treat.  Play this game three or four times a day and see if your dog runs to you faster each time!

Dog in the Spotlight

Congratulations to Manny and Cheryl for passing the Delta Therapy Dog evaluation with a complex rating!  Manny is a student of Taming the Wild Side and enjoys visiting kids at a local school and hospital.  When asked about Manny, Cheryl sent us the following:
Manny was born March 5, 2009 in Buda Texas.   He was a show dog but our breeder wanted him to be a therapy dog instead.   She said it meant more to her than all the ribbons or medals in the world.   Manny has a sister, Pixie, that is also a therapy dog.   Manny’s favorite thing to do is whatever his big sister is doing.   Manny is certified as a R.E.A.D. dog and goes to Blue Haze Elementary School, he also visits children at Cook Children's Medical Center.  He is a new member of Delta Hearts of Gold in Fort Worth and loves to go on visits.
If you are interested in Therapy Dog, we have a new class beginning March!

Taming Tip #3:

In honor of Valentine's Day, this week our Taming Tip is to take your dog on a date to your favorite outdoor restaurant / coffee shop!  Take a chew or stuffed Kong for your dog to enjoy and a mat / towel so that you can practice your down-stay.  Don't forget to take some treats to reward your dog's good behavior and you can also have others reward your dog for a great down-stay.

For those of you in the Fort Worth area, here is a link to 25 restaurants that are dog friendly! Call before you go, some places offer pets on the patio only on certain nights.

Hike - Cartwright Park

We have four slots still available for our hike on Saturday!  The weather is going to be great, and I've heard that one of the best cures for cabin fever is a hike with your dog! :)

Weekly Taming Tip!

Each week we'll share a Taming Tip for you, your family and friends to do with your dog(s)!  These tips will help teach your dog real world manners in a fun way.  Leave us a comment and tell us how it went!

Taming Tip #2:

Walk your dog throughout your house, stopping at each door.  Ask your dog to sit and wait for the door to be opened.  Open the door, and have your dog wait for your cue to walk through the door.  (My release word for Glacier is "Okay".)  As long as your dog waits for your cue, it doesn't matter who goes through the door first.  Have fun, be patient, and teach your dog in baby steps.  For example, if your dog will only sit and wait until you touch the doorknob, click and treat and keep working toward being able to open the door completely.

Bonus Tip:
Look through all of your dog's toys and take out the toys that he or she doesn't play with anymore and donate them to your local dog shelter.  The toy you give away could be another dog's treasure!
